Dr. Yasmin Orders to Set Up Alzheimer-Dementia Units in Lahore

Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Provincial Health Minister of Punjab, on Tuesday ordered the authorities to set up separate units for people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The Punjab Government will build these centers in the Punjab Institute of Mental Health (PIMH).

On Tuesday, Dr. Yasmin chaired a meeting at the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department (SH&MED). The secretary of SH&MED Dr. Ahmad Javed, the additional secretary Dr. Shahid Latif, and the special secretary Ajmal Bhatti also attended the meeting to discuss the plan for setting up these units.

 

During this meeting, the health minister reviewed the steps that the hospital management is taking to treat patients at PIMH. The special secretary also presented her details of many new initiatives of PIMH management for facilitating patients.

Provincial Health Minister in her statement said that the Punjab Government on an urgent basis will take measures to build centers for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. She further added that Punjab Government will also provide special training courses to doctors and medical specialists at PIMH to treat patients at these centers.

Dr. Yasmin also directed the authorities to fill the vacancies of psychologists at the Punjab Institute of Mental Health immediately. She also ordered, the authorities need to hire male nurses to take better care of people with Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

She also discussed several methods with doctors and secretaries to improve patient facilities at PIMH. The Provincial Minister of Health stated that we will take every measure to build a state-of-art memory center, and this center will be the first medical facility of its sort.

There are not many centers for Dementia and Alzheimer’s in Punjab. Patients with these diseases were unable to get quality treatment and care. The government of Punjab decided to set up these centers to facilitate these patients.
