The growth rate of the infection has risen from 50 percent to 81 percent in just a span of one week. This has made the experts warn that ‘there are tough days coming.’

The official data shared on Friday exposed 30 new cases of Omicron Variant out of the 37 samples tested. The samples were tested through genome sequencing from January 3 to January 5. Results showed the fast spread and the total cases raising up to a total of 307.

As of now, the daily cases reported in Karachi have reached a total of 600.

The details also revealed 592 new cases of coronavirus detected in Karachi over the last 24 hours. 165 cases were also reported in the rest of the province out of 12,961 samples tested. Officials also declared on January 3 that almost 175 samples out of 351 came out as Omicron Positive.

Dr.Saeed Khan, a professor of molecular pathology and head of Sindh Health Lab at Dow University of Health Sciences said, “There is a serious threat that the situation might get dangerous in coming days as hospitals in the city have started admitting serious Covid-19 patients to their intensive care units, though in a limited number.”

“The peak of the Omicron Variant might approach earlier than it is expected”, he added.

While sharing his observations on the challenging situation, Dr. Khan suggested that “We must seize the opportunity available to us right now. The government should utilize all means, help remove misconceptions surrounding the Covid-19 vaccines and reduce the gap in vaccination. Second, we need to adopt the idea of smart working, which means making workplaces less crowded and managing work virtually, as much as possible.”
